Last week was Bike Week here in Brighton and Hove and to celebrate there was a cycle event on Hove Park on Saturday. Plunge and Pete Woolins from Workhaus were asked by Brighton and Hove Council to get involved and create a bike inspired ‘arty something’ that children could get involved with.

We had a ponder and came up with an idea for a piece of kinetic art. It would involve a number of large cardboard cutouts mounted on spindles which would be set into the ground and spun by means of bungees driven by a bicycle. Sounds complicated but it was actually rather simple to put together as we had been donated some cardboard by the wonderful people at Abbey Corrugated.

Armed with plenty of pots of paint and paintbrushes we simply set the kids loose on the cutouts. We could disengage the spinners while the kids were painting and when they were finished they would be reconnected and would spin away.

They looked lovely and the children had a great time getting messy in the sunshine.
